Budget beating tips for your FAB wedding

So, in the spirit of yesterday’s budget speech, we’ve decided to give you a list that can help you save some cash when it comes to planning your big day. It’s champagne taste on a beer budget all the way, baby!

* Have your wedding in winter. South African winters are actually lovely – it doesn’t rain, the sun shines and it isn’t totally freezing all the time, so you can get away with a sleeveless dress for most of the event.

* Have your wedding in the week or on a Sunday. This is actually quite popular nowadays, so it is not totally out of the norm anymore.

* Shop around for a good photographer that doesn’t cost the earth. They do exist (examples: the ones featured on this here blog). And nowadays they usually blog their work, so it’s not a hard task.

* Trim the guest list. And stick to it!

* Choose a non-traditional venue (or a new wedding venue that is still trying to establish itself). Less expensive options include restaurants, grand ol’ libraries or your parents' backyard. Just make sure you calculate the costs for items you'll need to bring in, such as porty loos and tables etc.

* Rent your wedding dress or find ones on sale. It’s really only for one day, so spending tons of thousands on one garment that you're going to wear for one day is a bit crazy if you think about it. Rationally.

* Save paper (and money) by doing an e-invite.

* Write your menu on a large chalkboard instead of printing menus for each person/table.

* Instead of getting a catering company to do your wedding, get a few speciality food trucks to serve your guests.

* Make your own favours or skip them all together.

* Use seasonal flowers and re-use your bridesmaids bouquets for your centrepieces. Or use things like fresh wheat (yes, wheat - see picture board below).

* Have a daytime / cocktail reception.

* Simplify your decor requirements and go for items that offer maximum impact with minimum expense such as candles, tasteful balloons and fairy lights.

* Serve signature cocktails and or limit the open bar to just wine and beer.

* Add the finishing touches to a cake yourself (like pretty ribbons or candies) or opt for a smaller cake.

Oh My Sweet Love is a Gauteng based dessert styling company owned and run by Elmarie Van Der Westhuijzen. With a passion for styling and a keen eye for detail, coupled with a design background, she decided to focus her styling love towards weddings. Perfect wedding at Imperfect Perfection

Terry has to be one of the most featured brides on this here blog. (We covered her E-session and Bridal shower and now we're covering her wedding). Being my sister's best friend, we've seen her plan her perfect day from the moment Erin popped the question. There is nothing better than reliving the fruits of her efforts with these stunning pics of her big day from Laura Jane Photography. Terry is a detail orientated kinda gal and decided to theme her wedding around the concept of trees which worked so well from her invitations, to her motifs used on the tables. She handmade her runners and bouquets and, being the owner of Ribbon Design Stationary, created all the invitation and menus etc.

The result was a wonderfully personal wedding, sprinkled with all the touches a savvy DIY bride would wish for, especially since everything looked so polished and professionally put together.

Wedding Hair Trends 2012

With 2012 in full swing, it’s a good idea to keep abreast of the wedding hair trends for your big day.

Plaits:
With the emphasis on detail, plaits are in and can be executed in a myriad of ways in a way that adds volume. It can be the central point of your hairstyle or just an added detail on the side, combined with your chosen style of choice, like a messy bun. Play with the idea of loose plaits, fishtail braids etc. as well as extensions.

Vintage:
We’re loving the soft, wavy look for brides for hair both long and short. Either with accessories (birdcage veil, sparklies or feathers) which can complement the look, or combined with the asymmetrical trend, vintage hair styles are lovely...and timeless, even for a trend.

We just have to share this beautiful wedding by Tyme Photography we came across. They shot these nuptials at River Place (Hennops River) in October last year and we just love ALL the vintage detail! The blue of the bridesmaids dresses; the pops of yellow in the bridal bouquet; the lace used for the seating charts; the grooms badge; the fairy lights that peppered the reception area ... not to mention the bunting, the bunnies, the vintage car, the lemonade bottles! A 50s housewife bridal shower

My sister Nicci is a bridesmaid for an upcoming wedding (we featured the e-session here: Terry + Erin) and decided to throw a 50s housewife themed bridal shower for the bride. What a cute idea! We love the pretty pastels, her 50s cut out glasses and curlers and the baby blue Vespa parked in the garden. She even designed cute vintage style invites and tags for the lucky packets! Nicci’s tips for perfecting this look:
* polka dot wrapping paper is a must for a 50s houswife theme and you can use it in a myriad of ways, such as a tablecloth held down with tablecloth weights
* old school Frankie’s cooldrinks (she loved the Lemonade one)
* edible sweetie necklaces and bracelets
* old school props such as the scales, hatbox and glass beverage dispenser she got from Moi Decor
* add some bunting and balloons for to get a festive look

Whimsical Farmstyle Venue for Weddings

I love profiling venues that are slightly off the “wedding beaten track” here in Gauteng...especially venues with character and wonderful photo opportunities. One such venue I have been dying to blog about (but really couldn't find worthwhile pics to go with it – until now thanks to Melanie Wessels Photography) is Jan Harmsgat, a guesthouse Cullinan ( a small diamond mining town north of Pretoria). What makes this venue one of a kind is that you can hire vintage cars from them too. Admittedly, the style of this venue isn’t for everyone, but if you’re going for a whimsical/vintage, farm inspired look, then it'll complement it wonderfully. Melanie, who second shot for Laura Jane Photography on this particular wedding, took some great pics and captured the essence of this quirky venue beautifully. Hello friends! We’re back from our amazing trip to Paris and ready to blog our little wedding hearts away this week!

First up is this super cute e-session taken by the lovely Laura Jane from Laura Jane Photography, featuring one of our dear friends and vendors Terry from Ribbon Wedding Design. Terry is getting married in the next couple of weeks and we just know it is going to be fabulous...

This engagement shoot was taken in downtown Pretoria, where the beautiful old buildings and Church square made a perfect backdrop. A friend of mine called Rocio is a stunningly talented Peruvian lady, who does the most amazing makeup. Having worked in New York and with models and soap stars on the telenovelas in her home country, she now resides in Johannesburg after having marrying a South African.

With an impressive portfolio showcasing her beautiful work, Rocio is a blessing when it comes to bringing out your best "you" on your big day. Her wedding makeup is unbelievable and really stays on all day long without that “cakey” look. Whimsical Alice in Wonderland Wedding Inspiration

The ladies at Moi Decor have been super busy with organising a beautifully styled “Alice in Wonderland” tea party themed shoot to showcase their gorgeous rental items. With fully themed weddings becoming more and more popular in 2012, Moi’s array of vintage items are perfect to bring almost any nostalgic theme to life. (View more wedding trends for 2012 here). But it doesn’t stop there. This Alice theme will also work well for a shower or an “unbirthday”!

Here are some more tips for your Alice in Wonderland themed event:

• Incorporate alarm clocks, old school stop or pocket watches, vintage keys and keyholes as part of your decor
• Use “drink me” or “eat me” tags for the edibles on display (this can work very well for a dessert and beverage stand)
• Playing cards or their iconography or any royal motif can be used
• Bunnies, top hats, teacups, vintage books and frames
• Garden games such as croquet are a winner too! Especially for guests who may be waiting while you are taking photos
• Don’t be afraid to make little bows from dainty ribbons which you can use almost anywhere – on your menus or table place settings, to adorn teacups hanging from a chandelier
• There is an array of wording options you can use for invitations. Tell your guests not to be late for a very important date, or formally request their presence for a game of croquet. Quotes from the book can also be used as table numbers.

Yay! You’re engaged! Now what..?

He proposed. You said yes! *victory dance*. And now here we are. There are probably a myriad of things going through your mind during this time, but take a breath AND our advice on our top 10 actions you and your new fiancé need to think about:

1. Share the news!
This momentous milestone is (hopefully) going to happen just once in your life, so it deserves a bit of attention. Some couples opt for sms’s, Facebook, twitter, or bbm statutes. Or you could go the old fashioned route and call everyone on the telephone.

2. Get your ring sized and insured
Ok, this is a bit of a schlep, but if that ring isn’t sized correctly or insured properly, you may have a problem down the line if it gets lost or stolen. Something to think about...

3. Save the date ... or not
So, right after congratulating you and asking “Let’s see the ring...”, you're going to be bombarded with "When is the wedding?". It’s ok to not have a specific date in mind, so give people a vague answer like “Probably the end of next year” or “It really depends on the availability of the venue we choose”.

4. Start gathering info
Nowadays, there are wedding blogs and wedding websites you can peruse in addition to buying a stack of wedding magazines. This is where you get an idea of what kind of wedding you want (winter, summer, outdoor, cocktail, champagne breakfast, themed, not themed – view our blog post on 2012 wedding trends for some ideas) and how many (if any) bridesmaids you want etc. Create a scrapbook with all your favourite ideas as there is a ton of stuff out there... even we get overwhelmed!

5.Set the budget
This is going to determine the guest list, the location, the food, the dress, and in essence the type of wedding you'll have. Chat to both sets of folks about the (often touchy) subject of who is going to contribute to what and what you as a couple can afford. One of the main aspects of weddings nowadays (due to the high cost of living and the recession) is that they've become smaller and more intimate, with more personalisation and DIY taking place. Those mammoth weddings that feel like corporate functions are a thing of the past. You can have the wedding of your dreams on a budget if you do your homework!

6. Work out the guest list
This is going to determine the size of the venue you need. So it'is imperative that you get both sets of parents' input and create a guestlist that takes everyone into consideration, especially if parents are contributing to the wedding. 7. Venue, Photographer, Dress
The venue will probably determine your date. Once you know the date, you can organise the photographer. However, bear in mind that if there is a specific photographer you want to use, they may be booked on that specific date, so it can be a bit tricky. A good idea is to get a list of available dates from the venue and the photographer so you can get the best of both! And then start worrying about the dress. Finding the dress of your dreams is a little easier than finding the ideal venue which can accommodate your guest list and your date.

8. Bridesmaids and Groomsmen
Now you can go ahead and pick who want to share your special day with you. This can be tough...good luck!

9. Take it easy!
Calm down! Don’t panic! The last thing we need is a nervous bride who over eats, over drinks or over smokes herself to death.

10. Focus on the marriage
And this is the most important. Spend less time focussing on the wedding day and rather focus on the constitution of marriage. Your wedding is one day, a marriage is a lifetime. Invest time and money in pre-marital counselling and have date nights where wedding talk is NOT allowed!

With the plethora of venues in and around Joburg and Pretoria nowadays, it's quite novel to find one that isn’t too well known as a wedding venue, but delivers as one. It has been said that one of the big trends for 2012 is that brides are going to favour alternative locations as ceremony and reception venues. And one such venue that we predict will be pretty popular is shopper’s paradise Duncan Yard. Nestled in the heart of bustling Pretoria in the Hatfield/Brooklyn region, this little boutique lifestyle centre is quite unique and more recently its flagship restaurant, Pappas, has been host to a few weddings this year. A while ago we posted a wedding held at this very venue. What makes this venue a winner is its quaintness and authenticity and the fact that the whole of Duncan Yard serves as a photographer dream. Duncan Yard will also be hosting its first ever bridal showcase in March 2012, and this is set to establish the venue permanently on the wedding map, as it is host to a myriad of suppliers relevant to the wedding industry: hair, makeup, decor, beauty etc. For more info, visit duncanyard.co.za

Wedding Trends for 2012

Hey Hey it's Friday! No it's not...but it sure feels like it. With this week being the last working week for most in 2011 (not for a sad few, like moi, who is not vacationing this festive season), I decided to do a post on the wedding trends we can see in 2012. From the cake to the dress to the decor, we give you the heads up on what is going to be the big ticket items for 2012:

The Dress

Ok boob tube dresses, your time is up! Lace sleeves are back, as are illusion necklines. It’s so nice to see OTHER kinds of necklines coming to the fore...

As for colour, Blush is making a comeback and is a pretty acceptable alternative to white.

Vera Wang went a bit OTT with this one and featured tea-coloured dresses with lace detail on her runway...but we must say, we're liking this trend.

Photography
Engagement Shoots (e-sessions) have become increasingly popular, as it not only helps you get to know your photographer. The other benefit is that it also helps you become comfortable having your photos taken together and you learn how to pose for a flattering shot. By the time your wedding day rolls around, you will feel like a professional model. But remember, this is not a HAVE TO HAVE...it's totally optional. View some e-sessions featured on this blog!

Cake & Food
Cupcakes were a big trend last year, but in 2012 the prediction is taller, sleeker minimalist cakes, with red velvet is a big flavour favourite. Say goodbye to ornate flower detail as well and hello to romantic icing ruffles.

Dessert tables are also HUGE and this particular food station will include your wedding cake on a pretty, porcelain cake stand, surrounded by a myriad of cookies, macaroons and mini cheesecakes.

Food stations, as mentioned above, are becoming a permanent fixture at weddings and is more interesting that a standard buffet. Think hot dog and hamburger stations or even just for your canapés as opposed to having them "waitered" around. We love this pie station idea in the pic below:

Decor
Full-blown themes are in, not just colour schemes. So it's no longer "pink and peach", but "Alice in Wonderland", "Circus Circus" or "The Great Gatsby".

Non-floral accents in the form of feathers, fabrics, and metals being incorporated into the wedding decor. Jewelled accents never seem to go out of style!

Personalisation. This isn't necessarily DIY, but aspects like monogrammed invitations, tables named after your favourite movies, songs or books. The sky is the limit with this!

Venue & reception
2012 will see smaller, more intimate weddings, with a preference for an outdoor ceremony. Venues that can cater for this (such as Toadbury and Hazeldene Hall) are usually also quite nostalgic in architecture, which just adds to the intimate nature of smaller weddings. Long tables are also making a comeback and are perfect for smaller weddings and not only look great, but are ideal for creating a personal and fun atmosphere. Banquet tables are a treat to decorate too as you can use all different centrepieces at certain points on the table such as pillar candles, flowers, tea lights, vases, lanterns etc...

I first saw them at a store in Morningside Shopping Centre (can't remember the name - it's a little clothing shop on the same side as Exclusive Books on the upper level). They're apparently very comfy and come in a myriad of colours...and I must say they're growing on me quite nicely. I wouldn't mind a pair!

A Contemporary Jozi Wedding, The Forum @ The Campus

The talented photographers at Tyme Photography captured this beautiful ceremony at the stunning boutique hotel La Chatelat in Sandton, and the wedding reception at The Forum, Bryanston in October. Surrounded by offices, this venue isn’t always an obvious choice when it comes to a wedding, but the contemporary space worked well with the magnificent outside tent and then the beautiful purple-blue lighting inside the venue. So much so, that it transformed the whole space! The bride clearly has good taste - we love her veil, her dress, the flowers and her cake... And her groom is pretty handsome too! The Three Big Dresses of 2011

2011 saw the weddings of some our most iconic couples – with one capturing the hearts and imagination of billions, another just inciting confusion and furore and then another creating a cult-like following. What we are interested in, however, is... which dress was your favourite?

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton)
Kate chose a classic, timeless lace wedding gown by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. Elegant and sophisticated, we loved her teardrop earrings and simple but feminine hairstyle. Inspired by Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, many A-listers have chosen this kind of look with the lace detail around the bust/necline, including Ivanka Trump. We loved the detail and Kate's dress!

Kim Kardashian
This dress just had to be mentioned. Firstly, because its Vera Wang and secondly it has to be the most publicised quicky marriage in history. But enough bout Kimmie’s failure to commit, we are talking about the dress. Personally, we felt it could have been more fitting around the bustline, and we weren’t a fan of the headdress, but overall it epitomises the fairy princess bride if that's the look you are going for...a bit 80s of you ask us...

Bella Swan Cullen
Ok, so love it or hate it, but Twilight is big. And so is Bella’s dress, designed for the movie by Carolina Herrera, but reproduced for the wedding market by Alfredo Angelo. This dress has a vintage, romantic appeal with its long sleeves, and soft Chantilly-inspired lace appliqué on the back. This is a very pretty dress and we love the idea of it for a winter wedding.

It's not very often that I get to see a stylish bride NOT dressed in white...but this bride hit the nail on the head. After doing research into the tradition of white wedding dresses, bride Michelle found that the concept of a white dress is a fairly recent trend, dating back only to when Queen Victoria married Albert. Prior to that, brides wore all sorts of colours. And because she wanted to look her best (in black - not white), she chose black and looked amazing! With this wedding held at Shepstone Gardens and shot by Alana Meyer Photography, it was a day where all aspects worked well together, with vintage being the theme of the day. DIY Lace votives

This is such an awesome DIY from Family Chic! Spruce up some plain ol' votives with pretty lace ribbon, which you can get at a haberdashery or even a craft store in your area. Just cut off a strip of the lace that covers the perimeter of your votive candle and sew the overlapped edges together so it stays in place. And Voila! Cute little votives...

Inspirational DIY wedding at Kleinkaap, Centurion

Happy Monday friends! So sorry for being quiet, but I was in Cape Town last week for a bit of R & R...although I spent more time perusing vintage stores and cafes along the City Bowl and Southern Suburbs more than anything else...

Nevertheless, I happen to have a treat for you today. The lovely Gauteng based Laura from LauraJane Photography recently posted such a stunning DIY wedding held at Kleinkaap in Centurion and I just had to share it with you. The bride’s vision is so inspiring! She made all the stationery, the bunting, table decorations and boutonnieres. We are particularly loving her seating chart (rosette badges on ribbons which guests could pin to their outfits so everyone knew who was who ...so clever!) and the word search puzzle guests could play with while they wait. We love it all!

Be the beauty on your wedding day...

So with all the stress that comes from planning a wedding, one thing not to neglect is your beautiful self. Beauty diva Shereen from Waxed in Rosebank, provided us with some tips and advice on how you can ensure you're picture perfect for your big day! We are especially loving the pamper party idea for your bridal party, a specialty of hers!

Here are some of her tips:
Face: Start with facials 2 -3 months prior to your wedding, as you are at risk of breaking out if you leave this till 1 week/2weeks before. This will plump, hydrate and clear your skin for the big day.
Nails: For tips, go a day or so before wedding, as they tend to break. If you would rather grow your own nails, it’s best to start a few months before with gel overlays to strengthen your natural nails, allowing them to grow to the desired length. Follow up with a gel overlay a day or so before wedding. The most classy option is the French look with diamante/stripers for detail.
Waxing: This should be done as close to the wedding as possible, to prevent regrowth/ingrowns as well as to last for the honeymoon.
Eyelashes: Lash extensions are the way to go for a bride! Do this as close to wedding as possible also. If you do this, tinting is not necessary.
Tinting: Brow tinting is vital to make sure the most natural look is achieved, especially when most brides colour their hair. Dark, well groomed brows frame the eyes especially if brows are shaped with an angular arch to accentuate eyes.
Feet: A pedi is recommended to remove rough skin/corns/calluses as well as toe nail paint/gel overlay. This will last for up to 4 weeks (even longer) which is great for beach/honeymoon so you don’t have to worry about chipping.
Makeup: It is very important to choose a brilliant make-up artist with good knowledge of lighting! Photos are taken in day and evening, so light contrast is vital.
Pamper Parties: a stunning pamper party idea is to get all the bridesmaids/family of bride /bride pampered in luxury of their own home, offering various treatments, where the bride can get extra attention such as a massage (back, neck, shoulder suggested) as it’s very stressful organising a wedding, and this is divine to de-stress and unwind.

You would think that this concept is quite simple and that photographers usually cover all the shots you would deem as necessary as representation of your big day. This is usually the case, but with the stress of the big day and all the chaos surrounding the photographer and you, it’s a good idea to have a list of Must-Have shots to be taken on your big day. You know... just in case!

Here are our top ten Must-Haves:

1. The Dress on its own
This is probably the most expensive piece of clothing you will ever wear. Ever. A good enough reason for this Must-Have! Over and above the fact that it's one of the most anticipated aspects of a wedding.

DIY Inspiration: Mini Cookie Wedding Cakes

I love this idea! It’s not only super cute and will get the guests talking, but it’s a great DIY project too. These mini wedding cake cookie things actually come from Martha Stewart Weddings, although I found this DIY tutorial on Lucy Dylan Weddings. You can find royal icing at any baking shop or try www.cakedeco.co.za.

Sugar Cookie Cakes (from Martha Stewart Weddings, Winter 2006)
Makes 64 cookies, enough for 8 cakes
• 8 cups sifted all purpose flour
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp salt
• 2 cups unsalted butter, softened
• 4 cups sugar
• 4 eggs
• 4 tsp vanilla extract
• Small store-bought gum-paste or icing flowers (2 cm each)

Sift flour, baking powder, and salt into a large bowl; set aside.
Put butter and sugar into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment.
Mix on medium speed until pale and fluffy. Mix in eggs and vanilla. Reduce speed to low.
Gradually mix in flour mixture. Divide dough into 4 pieces; flatten each into a disk, and wrap in plastic.
Refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour (or overnight).

Preheat oven to 180 degrees with racks in upper and lower thirds. Let 1 disk of dough stand at room temperature just until soft enough to roll, about 10 minutes. Roll out dough on a lightly floured work surface to 0.6c cm thick, adding more flour as needed to keep dough from sticking. Using cookie cutters, cut out 24 x 8cm rounds, 24 x 7cm rounds, and 16 x 5cm rounds. Transfer to baking sheets lined with parchment paper as you work, keeping rounds of the same size on the same sheet. Repeat with remaining dough.

Chill in freezer until very firm, about 15 minutes. Bake until edges turn golden, 15 to 18 minutes. Transfer cookies to racks; let cool completely. Transfer icing to a pastry bag fitted with a small plain round tip. Pipe around top edges of each cookie, about half a centimeter from edge; fill in with a thin layer of icing. Smooth with a small offset spatula. (Reserve about 1/4 cup icing for assembling cookie cakes.) Let set, at least 6 hours (or overnight).

Stack 3 large cookies, securing with dabs of icing in between. Repeat, stacking 3 medium cookies and 2 small cookies on top. Secure a gum-paste flower on top of each cookie cake using a small amount of icing. Repeat with remaining cookies and icing. Let stand until set, at least 30 minutes, before packaging.

What a miz day for a Shoesday up here in the Highveld. Beautiful Balloon Inspiration

One of my favourite wedding trends (I actually don’t like the word trend to describe this, because I think it’s actually a timeless decor idea...but moving along) are wedding balloons. They add pops of colour and a festive-ness, can be used as decor (especially the big ones that look like lanterns) and as props for your photos. They are super cute, whimsical and are just all round awesome! Oh, and they are inexpensive. What’s not to love?

The best balloons I managed to find were big lantern type and heart shaped balloons (which are my favourite) at a balloon company based in Durban (www.balloonandprinting.co.za). Alternatively you can also try Jozi based www.skytoys.co.zain Mayfair. Remember that when it comes to helium balloons, only helium "type" balloons - not just any balloon! For more suppliers, a simple Google search for balloons in your area should also lead you to other balloon suppliers.

To favour or not to favour...

Aaah, wedding favours. Once, revered as the perfect little thank you gift before the recession, and now, just an anomaly... So, what is the latest with regards to these little penny pinchers? Are your guests going to think you’re a schnoep if they don’t receive a favour? Are they going to care/take note/remember?
Probably not. A wedding favour does not a fabulous wedding make. However, they are thoughtful and can add to the detail of your big day. I have heard of brides budget between R20 – R50 per favour. Which can work out quite pricey. However, you don’t have to go this route. When it comes to doing wedding favours on a budget, here are your options that won’t break the bank:

Seeds, plants, and flowers are a great symbol of your growing love!

Candy from a candy bar – it’s pretty, is a great photo opp and your guests with sweet tooths will be over the moon

Lotto tickets – R2.50 a pop...comon what’s not to love about this one?

Double up your favours as table decor – think potted flowers/plants, candy apples, luggage tags, vintage books...the list here is actually endless

Small candles, lollipops, silver bells to ring as you leave the church

DIY Tutorial: Chiffon / Tulle Flowers

A few weeks back I posted beautiful blue shoes, adorned with cute little chiffon flowers (which were clipped on) for Tuesday Shoesday. Here is a DIY tutorial I found on one of my favourite blogs, Sparkle and Hay, on how to make these precious little treasures yourself...and you can use them on hair, pinned on a dress, shoes or a clutch. They are so easy to make and are super versatile and will add that little element of girly-ness to your look!

This is what you will need:
Chiffon and tulle fabric – how many metres will depend on how many flowers you want.
Paper, a pen, scissors, pins, needle & thread, and glass seed beads.

Step 1:
Create a stencil by drawing a single petal shape on the paper and cut it out. You can Google petal patterns to help you here.

Step 2:
Take your fabric and fold it into a square a little larger than the flower pattern. Pin the pattern to fabric and carefully cut out. Repeat this process until you have enough layers to make a full flower – the number of layers will vary depending on the weight of your fabrics and the size of your flower. (Example shown here uses 26 layers of fabric)

Step 3:
Stack flower cut outs, alternating fabric types and staggering petals. Use a needle and thread to secure them together at the center. Pinch together the center of the flower (from the bottom) and secure with stitches to create volume and give the flower and authentic shape.

Step 4:
If desired, sew decorative seed beads in the inside center of the flower and sew the flower to a hair clip, comb, or piece of ribbon.

Candy Coloured wedding at Helderfontein Estate

I’ve blogged about Helderfontein Estate before, but it just goes to show how a venue can change through the eyes of the photographer and the personality of the couple. This wedding incorporated soft candy colours with vintage books and ribbon and Simply Me Photography did an awesome job with these pics. Jozi wedding at The Radisson Blu, Sandton

Now THIS is a ‘joburg’ wedding, taken at the Radisson Blu hotel in Sandton by the talented Schantel from Kiekie Photography. The modern venue is chic and the head-to-toe ceilings in the reception hall allowed the guests to overlook the whole of Jozi, making a perfect backdrop for this lovely wedding. I love the clean, sophisticated look here, which isn't something you see everyday now that there's a big vintage trend. Nevertheless, I think this big day is truly timeless! Candy buffets have become quite a trend at weddings and are a great way to emphasize your colour scheme as well as providing favours for your guests... and they look great in photos!

However, there are a few things to consider when looking at incorporating a candy buffet table at your wedding:
1) it can, very quickly, look messy as people help themselves to candy
2) empty candy containers aren’t going to be very pretty to look at once the candy is gone
3) you may need someone to make sure the container are continuously filled with candy...and this cannot be left to a wedding guest to do
4) kids are going to be like moths to a flame to this table

So, yes, it’s pretty to look at. But we all know once people start digging in, without any control or supervision, it may soon look like a candy bomb exploded at your wedding. So, if you can plan around the cons of a candy buffet, we say why not? When else in your life are you going to be able to have your very own candy bar? Beautiful wedding at Helderfontein Estate

A good friend of mine got married in August at the spectacular Helderfontein Estate. (I actually blogged about her cutsey patootsie wedding cupcakes a while back.) The super talented Alexander Smith was the photographer and boy oh boy...these photos are fantastic! He really captured the bridal couple's laid back personality brilliantly and took some awesome shots of the venue itself. Top 5 Gauteng Venues

Ok, so I know I have mentioned which venues are my top 5 in a myriad of posts, but I have decided to consolidate them for you here. My criteria for the top 5 wedding venues in Gauteng were simply this: something that photographs well, isn't too well known (venue overkill...I could name a few), has an awesome vibe and can really allow the couple to express themselves on their big day. Tall order, I know. Let me know what you think of my top 5:

Venue Number 5: The Rand Club

Love the library and the old colonial world charm feel here....bonus is that you can take your wedding pics in the heart of Jozi, which is also quite cute and different.

Venue Number 4: Turbine Hall

My cousin got married here, and it was really the BEST wedding I have ever been to. The lighting was amazing, the food divine, and it really is the perfect venue for a city wedding!

Venue Number 3: Imperfect Perfection

Beautiful rustic charm without pretence...this venue is a wonderful palette that allows you to incorporate your unique style into your day. And price wise, it is really reasonable.

Venue Number 2: Hazeldene Hall

Again, loving the old world Victorian charm at this venue. And the brookilace and outside gazebo. Also, Word Of Mouth are the exclusive caterers for this venue. You just can’t go wrong here.

Venue Number 1: Morrells Boutique

Ah, Morrells. It truly is quintessentially French and although more suited to a smaller wedding (80 people) it’s the quality in the food and the detail that make this venue my favourite Jozi venue (for now anyway....)

This wedding was held at one of Joburg’s most beautiful boutique hotels, Morrells. This also happens to be one of my top 5 Gauteng venues (the others are Hazeldene Hall, Rand Club, Imperfect Perfection and Turbine Hall). With its French Provencal inspired surrounds and interiors, its major eye candy for us here at Teapots. We love the ivy creeping on the walls, the picturesque garden, the olive grove and the detailed furniture and accessories.

They always stock the most splendid clothing and accessories in the colours I absolutely adore: peaches, salmon, soft pinks, duck egg blues... My credit card takes a proper beating every time I walk into a Forever New. Which is often. And is also why I know that instead of undergoing the arduous task of getting bridesmaids dresses made, you can simply get them at Forever New if it suits your colour palette. Whether it be the dress, the shoes or the bag, you are sure to find something at one of the many Gauteng stores (Cresta, Sandton, The Zone, Clearwater, Fourways Mall, Eastgate and Woodlands, The Glen, Melrose Arch). I want it! I want it all!

Sugar Coated Raindrops for your sweet tooth

I was fortunate enough to attend a splendid wedding of a good friend this past weekend and an awesome touch was the fabulous little cupcakes which made up the wedding cake. A good friend of the bride, Natasha Thorne of Sugar Coated Raindrops, a graduate of the esteemed Prue Leith College of Food & Wine, made these beautiful cupcakes and presented them in see-through gift favour boxes. Needless to say, they were a great hit.

The vintage inspired cake was for a 21st and is just as lovely!

DIY Idea: Ribbon Wands

It’s DIY Thursday! And we have the perfect alternative to the boring old confetti and rice for when you and your groom walk out the church as man and wife: ribbon wands! They are easy to make, can be used later in the evening when you leave the ceremony and make a cute memento...

What you will need:

Long wooden skewers – the ones that you use to make sosaties are fine (from any supermarket or grocery store). Preferably the ones without the sharp pointed edges...you don’t want the flowergirls poking their eyes out!

Approx 30cm - 60cm ribbon in your wedding colors. You can decide on the length here, but make sure all the ribbons you use have the same length. You can opt for one ribbon colour or a few in your wedding colours, thick or thin. Moi Decor has the most stunning collection of fabric ribbons in the most beautiful colours. In this example they have used thin satin ribbon in three colours. More ribbon makes more impact!

Instructions

Simply cut the ribbon in your desired length. If the ribbon is thin you can get away with tying it tightly on the skewer. If they are slightly thicker you may need some Bostik to glue the ribbon to the skewer. See what works best and test it before your big day!

French Vintage Wedding at Pappas Duncan Yard

For those of you who don’t know Duncan Yard in Pretoria, it's a little shopping centre nestled in the bustling suburb of Hatfield. It’s off the beaten track in terms of wedding venues, which is interesting because the restaurant, Pappas, provides the perfect backdrop for a quaint wedding. DIY Ring Pillow

It’s DIY Thursday at Teapots and I came across the cutest idea for your ring pillow –especially if you are having a rustic inspired wedding. Wedding pillows are so costly these days (I have never really understood why) and this one is so adorable and easy to make.

What you'll need:

A 13cm x 13cm X 3cm piece of Styrofoam

70cm fabric ribbon (3cm wide)

3 metres fabric ribbon (less than 1cm wide)

A 15cm x 15cm scrap of fabric

A handful of sphagnum moss

Straight pins

Round-headed pins

A pair of scissors

You can get the ribbons from Moi Decor, and the rest of the items from Flowerspot. You may need to find your pins from a haberdashery shop though.

Instructions
1. Centre your fabric face up on the Styrofoam square and fold the scrap fabric
edges over sides of the Styrofoam and secure with straight pins. Wrap
the corners neatly and pin. (see figure 1)
2. Turn your Styrofoam over so the fabric side is down. Take your
sphagnum moss and stretch it out across the top of the Styrofoam. Be sure
that the moss completely covers the surface. (see figure 2)
3. Cut a length of the skinnier ribbon and run it diagonally across the
mossed surface. Attach both ends of the ribbons on the sides of the
Styrofoam using straight pins. Repeat this process to create a diagonal
grid of ribbon on the top of the pillow.
4. Take your round-headed pins and stick them into the points where the
ribbons intersect on the pillow top. (see figure 4)
5. Turn the pillow on its side and pin the end of the wider ribbon in
the centre of the side, using your straight pins. (see figure 5)
6. Wrap the ribbon around all four sides, concealing the fabric edges and
skinny ribbon tails. Pull it tightly as you go and keep the ribbon edges
lined up with the edges of the pillow. (see figure 5)
7. When you pass your starting point, fold under the ribbon tail and pin
it down using your round-headed pins. (see figure 6)
8. Trim off any loose moss bits.
9. Cut a 30cm piece of the skinnier ribbon and tie it to the round-headed pin
in the centre of the pillow. Attach your rings by tying a bow. (see
figure 7)

The Splendour that is the Rand Club

One of Jozi’s hidden gems (I think), is the Rand Club in downtown Jozi. This colonial masterpiece represents a piece of history as one of the first ‘old boys clubs’ in South Africa, frequented by the likes of Cecil John Rhodes back in the day. What makes this venue awesome is the fascinating old school library, the regal staircases and the duck egg blue reception hall. I love anything bookish, and so I have listed this venue as one of my top 5 in Gauteng (together with Turbine Hall and Hazeldene Hall - the others will follow, promise). Also, being situated in town, you can take advantage of the city landscape when it comes to the photos. Fabulous, old chap, just fabulous!

This wedding was taken by a friend of mine, Marc Dryden-Schofield, and he really did a great job at showcasing the magnificence of the Rand Club.

Hazeldene Hall

Hazeldene Hall is also one of my favourite venues in Gauteng. As their website says, it is an "example of classic colonial architecture". It is unlike anything in Jozi and offers the perfect background for vintage and whimsical or elegant and contemporary. I came across this wedding taken by Blackframe Photography and it just proves why this is a venue worth considering when it comes to your big day! Oh, and let’s not forget the awesome photographers! Wedding Stationery Trends for 2011

Trends in wedding stationery seem to be changing almost as fast as fashion changes every season! It’s important as a bride-to-be and as a stationery designer to know what these trends are and whether you plan to go with them or against them. If you’re not a stationer or bride-to-be it’s just as intriguing to see where the ream of invitations is flowing and to know what to expect in the post! Terry Oates from Ribbon Design gives us her Top 10 Trends for 2011:

1. Vintage Vogue
Brides still gravitate to this classy, comforting style; often achieved with a dated pattern or material texture. Damask patterns and the fleur-de-lis are used to create Victorian glamour or Parisian prestige. Vintage never gets old.

2. Go Green
Eco-friendly invites are as hot as global warming. Some stationers have even opted to use this as their ‘thing’ to attract the chic hippie client. Recycled paper and wood veneer are replacing pearly papers. Invitations are no longer layered with see-through paper or with extra inserts with the necessary information. This ‘extra info’ is often placed in an e-mailer or even a website. The idea of the ‘wed-site’ is sometimes used as a replacement for an in-your-hand invitation; encouraged for saving the planet and to cut costs on printing and paper.

3. Informal wording
“We’re getting hitched” or “John asked Mary and she said Yes”- colloquial phrases are used in wedding stationery to set a more fun and relaxed tone. Many modern couples are paying for or contributing to the wedding so the necessity for the invitation to start with the parent’s names is no longer a must. The traditional “You are cordially invited” is cordially a thing of the past.

4. Fauna & Flora
Nature inspired stationery is almost always elegant and charming. Proteas, hummingbirds, wild rose bushes and trees are used to cover a large ‘wallpaper’ area or used as singular elements. Proteas in particular are a hit in our home country, also translated into the décor and bride’s bouquet. It’ll be interesting to watch how this style develops in South Africa… I see some Nguni cattle and antelope walking onto these cards!

5. Brave colour schemes
Duck egg blue and post box red, black and yellow, mint and pastel pink. Fortunately these seemingly outrageous colour schemes are generally executed by trained and talented designers who ‘ease’ the shock with calming graphics or minimal embellishments.

6. Travel
Stamped postcards, miniature airplanes, red and blue postage pinstripes – graphic elements from travel tickets and ‘sent-from-afar’ postcards are used to tell the story of a couple who come from different countries, have travelled a lot or have succeeded in a long-distance relationship. This theme is often carried through into the on-the-day stationery and décor with vintage suitcases and ‘numbering’ of tables named with different places the couple have visited.

7. Texas small town poster
This may be something only the more avant-garde stationers have delved into but it’s quickly catching on as a cool style for stationery. Chunky, serif, drop-shadow fonts, you know, like the one used for Boswell’s Circus? A large point font such as this coupled with a sans-serif as well as a script font – this is the basis for that ‘ripped off the shutter doors of an American ranch bar’ look. Graphic elements such as the pointing hand and a rolled-out banner add some visual eye-candy and bang-bang! your old-school cowboy look is achieved.

8. Different fonts in different sizes
Another trend only recently picking up is when a few fonts in different sizes are used to form a boxed-in paragraph. The text is justified to contain the wording in a modern, clean-cut form. Words in a sentence will often be made a fuss of by enlarging them or even creating a visual element from them. The ampersand (&) in the middle of a sentence, for instance can be enlarged to form a graphic key. If done correctly, an absolute winner. With large gaps and too many fonts and sizes, an ineffective mess.

9. Divine Twine
Organza, velvet or even satin ribbon? So last year. Natural is the new, with cotton twines and grassy string tied around the envelope you’re far more likely to impress. So great when a trend is also cost-effective!

10. Laser cutting
Laser cutting, rather than die-cutting is the cutting of a specific shape, into or out of an alternate material. Think perspex, thin woods, foam and thick cardboards. This is sure to impress any guest. Unfortunately it’s a pricey practice so many brides opt for only a small section or pattern to be cut.

So I came across this wonderfully over-the-top "Alice in Wonderland-ish" cake by the super talented guys from choccywoccydoodah (based in the UK unfortunately) and it inspired me so much that I decided to do a post on Wedding Cake Ideas. Some of them are quite cute and quirky and I'm sure given the right brief, your cake baker can produce something similar...

Just like the cake above, think cartoony and overemphasised decorative items such as bows and flowers being the main attraction on these cakes...

DIY Idea: Brooch Bouquet

One of the most recent wedding trends I love is the idea of a brooch bouquet – its quirky, tasteful and allows you to incorporate a myriad of sentimental pieces into your wedding day. And the best is that this is a perfect DIY project that doesn’t shout “I’m a DIY project” on what many people may consider your most important day. By making the bouquet yourself, you can decide on the colour scheme and what baubles(earrings, hatpins) and brooches to add. And it will make a wonderful keepsake for years to come. To beat this winter chill we're currently experiencing in the Highveld, I found a wonderful Summer wedding taken by the fab Blackframe Photography at Toadbury Hall. The couples' laid back and fun personality just ooze out of these pics. This wedding had all the elements - beautiful hanging lanterns, a candy station and proper old fashioned confetti!

The days of plain white frosted, three tiered wedding cakes are no more. As Mia Roets from Cupcakes Ever After notes, “All rules about wedding cakes seem to have gone out through the window. Who said a wedding cake needs to be demure and white?”

Wedding cupcakes are fabulously versatile as they allow you to incorporate different flavours with frosting colours and can be presented in a variety ways.

Mia also mentions that vintage inspired cupcakes are a big trend right now. Think lace, bunting flags, antique cups and saucers and vintage glam photo frames. This trend is all about the detail, whether it is quirky or romantic and cupcakes are a great way to articulate your theme. They can be decorated with soft pastel frosting, sugared pearls and whimsical flags. Or a piece of lace or ribbon wrapped around each treat. You could even get away with presenting your cupcakes in teacups for that really whimsical look.

Remember, your wedding needs to reflect you as a couple. If you hate fruitcake, then don’t go there! Your guests will appreciate the details that make you YOU, and it will make for memories worth treasuring.

So it’s your wedding day and you've decided to go for the French inspired look and feel... But where to begin and what to choose? Parisian Chic, French Country, Vintage Romantic? A good place to start is your colour palette, which will set the tone of your look from the beginning.

Parisian Chic - A sophisticated palette of greys, light greens and soft whites are perfect for a minimalist Parisian chic look, accompanied by a few statement decor items like an over-the-top bling chandelier and mirror boxes. Fleur de lis votives & glass hurricanes will complement the elegant look.

This photographs very well and won't date, which is tres chic!

French Country – Think simple, yet understated, elegance with rustic lanterns, candelabras, candles in votives, jugs, urns and wooden boxes. Herbs could be incorporated into your flower arrangements as they look very natural (almost as if though someone picked it that morning) tied together with ribbons. Nice touches to this outdoorsey look. Colours for this look include a mixture of taupe and stone with peach and blush.

Vintage Romantic - Introducing soft pinks, lavender, blues with whites will provide a more girly, romantic look. Anything pastel can work here. Teacups can be used as part of your centrepiece, placed on stacks of old books – in a paler palette ofcourse. Birdcages, any old china, old crystal vases, lots of vintage silverware, chalkboard name tags, lots of flowers (especially roses and peonies) ... the idea is that nothing should match, so let your imagination take flight with this look! This can be a very fun theme and will be sure to start dinnertable conversation.
