2013 Wedding Trends

Happy New Year to our T&T readers! We hope you had a stunning new year and that your 2013 is filled with blessings which know no bounds :)

We’re kicking off the new year with our take on 2013 wedding trends. I did a quick squizz at the trends I posted for 2012 and I'm actually chuffed to say that it was pretty accurate. Yay!

So, what are we likely to see for 2013? Many of the trends established last year will be followed through this year too, the main being the themed, vintage feel being captured with cinematic and/or natural light photography and the choice of more intimate venues that lend to the chosen theme.

Themed weddings
Vintage is here to stay. It’s really elevated itself from being a mere trend to an actual wedding style. Cinematic themes lending to nostalgic, art deco and retro styles will be playing a role in weddings this year (Great Gatsby, Downton Abbey, Pan Am). We will see a move towards the sophisticated elegance of plated dinners and formal menus too.

Prints and Patterns
This detail wont only be limited to invitations or wedding accessories, but we will see this in bridesmaids dresses and cakes too. Chevron, stripes and polka dots as well as floral print to be specific.

Mint
With Emerald being the pantone colour for 2013, colours in these hues will really see a presence in weddings this year. The lighter hues are they crisp and refreshing and perfect for summery weddings, whereas but the darker hues will work well for weddings with a real art deco / roaring 20s feel.

Laser cut
For place settings, invitations, prop signage, cupcake wrappers.

Attention to Detail
DIY and custom detail is also going to be popular. Think stamp detail for name place tags and favour bags and paper straws for pre- reception drinks. Metallic foil stamping details on menus and invitations will also be seen. Garlands for decoration in the reception area will also be more than just vintage bunting – heart, circle, pom pom and birdie garlands are also going to be seen.

Lace
Thank you Kate Middleton. Lace isn’t going anywhere and the motif can be seen on almost anything including, but not limited to, dresses, cakes, invitation, table runners, chair ties etc. This also works well with vintage and Great Gatsby themed weddings.

Illusion necklines on wedding dresses
Playing on the lace theme, wedding dresses will display intricate illusion neckline and back detail. More sophisticated and reflecting a more vintage look, this trend is a continuation from last year.

Wedding styles vs wedding trends

When a bride starts planning the look and feel of her wedding, she can get confused by all the options available to her in terms of which “look” she can choose. A common question is: “What is the difference between a wedding style and a wedding trend?”

A wedding style is considered to be the “theme” of your wedding. It expresses the look and feel of the wedding as a whole. Wedding styles can include: Vintage, shabby chic, rustic, timeless elegance, classic, minimalist, modern, bohemian, country, farm style etc.

A wedding trend is something (a colour, a pattern, a motif) that is popular at a specific time, and may help you execute your wedding style. Some trends go out, and some don’t. Wedding trends can include: Hair braids, birds, the colour mint, the chevron pattern, snack stations, bunting and peplum wedding gowns etc.

Thus, brides should consider how and what trends to incorporate into their wedding style. We often hear brides say: “I don ‘t want it to look dated 5 years from now”. Integrated with caution and lending to the wedding style is probably the best way to bring a trend into a theme. For example: bunting (a vintage trend) and at a vintage themed wedding (style) may not be as timeless as the vintage brooch bouquet (trend).

Wedding Hair Inspiration: {Braids}

We are totally in love with the biggest hair trend for 2012 – the messy braid. It’s bohemian, vintage and classical all in one. Whether it’s to the side, swept in an updo or running across, this romantic style is one of our favourites and suitable for both bride and bridesmaids...

To “First Look” or not to “First Look”?

For those of you who don’t know, there’s a new(ish) wedding photography concept in town and it goes by the name of “First Look”. This is when the bride and groom meet and take a “First Look” at each other dressed in wedding attire just before the bride walks down the aisle.

The big debate is whether this is a good thing or not, because as almost all of you know, the groom seeing the bride in her dress before the wedding is said to be:
* bad luck;
* a break of tradition;
* robbing the family and friends of being in that moment when the bride and groom lock eyes as she walks down the aisle;
* .

I know many people who already lived together before they got married and the first look during the ceremony was one of the last pieces of tradition they had left when it came to the wedding. Which is fine ... if that is what you really want.

But is it...?

There are many advocates of the “First Look” and here’s why:

From a photography point of view, capturing the first intimate moment between bride and groom makes for wonderful, personal pics because there is more time. The raw emotion between just the two of them is something that’ll probably never be replicated in their lives again and there isn’t a rush-rush-rush–ness to it. Think about it...you as a couple get to savour this once in a lifetime moment without 150 people oggling you.

It also de-stresses the flow of the day, as:
* the bride and groom are a little bit more relaxed when they are saying their I Dos;
* there's no worrying about the length of the photo taking after the ceremony and how the (often bored) guests are doing on the canapes;
* the bridal couple get to enjoy the canapés too, which in turn leaves the guests more at ease.

In Winter months,the (technical) advantage of the “First Look” is that the couple get awesome natural light which they may not have had othwerwise.

In Summer months, make-up and hair looks ‘fresher’ in the images taken before the ceremony. South African Summers are no joke, so this is a biggie for me who tends to combust in heat.

So. To recap (in order to sell the idea to your significant other and interested parties): First Look = more time = less rush = less stress = more fun.

And if you're a cry baby like me, your make-up won’t look half as bad during the ceremony... which is always a bonus! So I am pro “First Look”!

How about you?

Autumn Trends for 2012

After the sweltering summer we’ve just experienced, waking up to a cool breeze and a slight nip in the air is more than welcomed! We love Autumn; the crisp mornings, the cooler evenings, amber coloured leaves falling to the ground and no threat of rain... Also, wedding wise, you get more for your buck, so what’s not to love? If you’re getting married this Autumn, then check out our Autumn trends for 2012. Happy reading xx

Pies & Soup
The fabulously friendly dessert table now includes different sweet and savoury pies. In some cases, it is replacing the wedding cakes and cupcakes completely. Although we do love us some cake, so we aren’t really big on it replacing that absolutely. The usual salad starter is replaced with a seasonal soup and crusty breads.

Navy & Charcoal & Metallics
Deep colours are back for bridesmaids dresses and accents, with the later leaning towards metallic’s for shoes, cakes, decorations and more.

Sleeves
Capped sleeves, bolero jackets or even fitted lace sleaves ala Kate Middelton. The usually strapless or sweatheart neckline will give way to more detail around this décolletage this Autumn.

Cozy receptions
With cooler weather, gatherings become more intimated, so comfy couches and coffee tables with throws are a nice addition to your reception area.

Wedding Trends for 2012

Hey Hey it's Friday! No it's not...but it sure feels like it. With this week being the last working week for most in 2011 (not for a sad few, like moi, who is not vacationing this festive season), I decided to do a post on the wedding trends we can see in 2012. From the cake to the dress to the decor, we give you the heads up on what is going to be the big ticket items for 2012:

The Dress

Ok boob tube dresses, your time is up! Lace sleeves are back, as are illusion necklines. It’s so nice to see OTHER kinds of necklines coming to the fore...

As for colour, Blush is making a comeback and is a pretty acceptable alternative to white.

Vera Wang went a bit OTT with this one and featured tea-coloured dresses with lace detail on her runway...but we must say, we're liking this trend.

Photography
Engagement Shoots (e-sessions) have become increasingly popular, as it not only helps you get to know your photographer. The other benefit is that it also helps you become comfortable having your photos taken together and you learn how to pose for a flattering shot. By the time your wedding day rolls around, you will feel like a professional model. But remember, this is not a HAVE TO HAVE...it's totally optional. View some e-sessions featured on this blog!

Cake & Food
Cupcakes were a big trend last year, but in 2012 the prediction is taller, sleeker minimalist cakes, with red velvet is a big flavour favourite. Say goodbye to ornate flower detail as well and hello to romantic icing ruffles.

Dessert tables are also HUGE and this particular food station will include your wedding cake on a pretty, porcelain cake stand, surrounded by a myriad of cookies, macaroons and mini cheesecakes.

Food stations, as mentioned above, are becoming a permanent fixture at weddings and is more interesting that a standard buffet. Think hot dog and hamburger stations or even just for your canapés as opposed to having them "waitered" around. We love this pie station idea in the pic below:

Decor
Full-blown themes are in, not just colour schemes. So it's no longer "pink and peach", but "Alice in Wonderland", "Circus Circus" or "The Great Gatsby".

Non-floral accents in the form of feathers, fabrics, and metals being incorporated into the wedding decor. Jewelled accents never seem to go out of style!

Personalisation. This isn't necessarily DIY, but aspects like monogrammed invitations, tables named after your favourite movies, songs or books. The sky is the limit with this!

Venue & reception
2012 will see smaller, more intimate weddings, with a preference for an outdoor ceremony. Venues that can cater for this (such as Toadbury and Hazeldene Hall) are usually also quite nostalgic in architecture, which just adds to the intimate nature of smaller weddings. Long tables are also making a comeback and are perfect for smaller weddings and not only look great, but are ideal for creating a personal and fun atmosphere. Banquet tables are a treat to decorate too as you can use all different centrepieces at certain points on the table such as pillar candles, flowers, tea lights, vases, lanterns etc...

That's it for our trends for 2012! Happy planning xxx
