Spring/Summer 2012 Wedding Trends

With wedding season 2012 in full swing, we thought to share with you our top wedding trends for Spring/Summer 2012. In terms of looks for the bride, think sophisticated romance which draws its inspiration from THAT big royal wedding last year. Mantilla veils with lace sleeve detail are proving to be the preferred style. Cupcakes are out, macaroons and petit fours are in.

With decor, vintage and boho chic is still a style that remains popular, and can be incorporated with classic items such as candelabras and chandeliers, which adds to the romantic elegance of the overall look. Regarding colours, classic white and ivory with pops of softer colours such as mint, seafoam, peach and coral are combined in flowers, decor and confectionary. The outcome is a delicate and whimsical look which has a timeless allure.

Summer Colour Trend 2013: Mouth-watering Mint

Mouth-watering mint is a colour trend for Summer 2013. This refreshing and crisp colour is casual and laid back, and perfect for your candy beverage table at your wedding. Moi Decor styled this shoot, which was taken by Hannalee Photography.

Mint coloured cupcakes, marshmallows, bunting and pompoms provided the necessary accents for the decor items, which included:
* mint vintage scale,
* glass candy jars,
* cake stands bottles,
* glass beverage dispensers,
* metal watering jug.

Summer time also means birdcages and birdie motifs, which were used too. To pick up the colour mint, sage saddlestitch ribbon was used to around the lemonade bottles and glassware items.

Spring Inspiration Board

Vintage decor ideas for your wedding

With vintage being quite a popular decor style for many brides, we decided to ask Carla from Moi Decor what she recommends to produce that vintage look effortlessly.

"The key thing is to not worry if everything doesn’t match exactly. It doesn’t have to be perfect," says Carla. The charm with going vintage with a shabby chic or even a rustic twist is that it's laid back and you have carte blanche in terms of matching what you like. The trick is to not go too overboard or get it too cluttered.

Vintage books as props or centrepieces:
Books piled up and bound with string or twine is a lovely way to incorporate the vintage theme. You can take it a step further by also opening the books and have them function as a display for your table number and your menu.

Typewriters:
These add a touch of nostalgia and are a great prop to create a vintage display. If you can get an older typewriter to work, even better, as it can function as tool for your guestbook table where your guests can write a message.

Milk cans and crates: Tap into the barnyard country chic look with some of these items to add authenticity and focal points for your event.

Suitcases:
This is also an easy way to set the vintage tone and they make great props for photos. You can use suitcases for confetti, your guest cards, or to house your wedding favours.

Shutters:
This is a great way to display your table seating or your menu. You can even use it as a backdrop for photos.

Lemonade bottles and Glass Beverage dispensers:
This is a great touch for your beverage table and creates a wonderful focal point. Dress up your little bottles with some ribbon and use some cute straws to perfect the look.

Scales:
Old school scales are also a great way to add some vintage cuteness to either your buffet or candy table (use them as tart or cakes stands) or a guest table, with some pretty flowers placed on top.

Baby trophies and teacups:
These are so cute and can be peppered throughout the table settings, housing little roses or just left plain as is.

Dark Shadows: Gothic Inspired Bridal Shoot

We’re always seeing weddings and shoots that are infused with the pretty pastel/sorbet colour palette. Today’s post is something different, thanks to Boho-Weddings. Wedding Inspiration: Metallics

With Autumn in full swing, we decided to do an inspiration board fit for an Autumn or Winter wedding. Sorbet-lik pastel colour palettes, so often favoured during the warmer months, tend to looking washed out in the colder months, and one way to spruce it up is to incorporate metallics. Combine deeper hues of pinks, purples, or blues with golds, silvers and ivories and you'll have an amazing and detailed look...

Save The Date Inspiration

Save The Date is something that sets the tone for your wedding and is a way of showing everyone your personality as a couple. In days gone by, the Save The Date came in the post, in the same style as the invitation which would follow a few weeks later. Nowadays, it is usually bundled up with a photographic e-session (engagement shoot), and allows you to be creative and present the world with a unified coupled up identity. You need not spend thousands on a Save The Date. With social media being one of the main ways we communicate now, it can be a simple pic that is emailed to your guests or put up as a Facebook cover photo. Alternatively a printed photograph that acts as a fridge magnet to continually remind everyone of your impending big day is also a cute idea. Autumn Trends for 2012

After the sweltering summer we’ve just experienced, waking up to a cool breeze and a slight nip in the air is more than welcomed! We love Autumn; the crisp mornings, the cooler evenings, amber coloured leaves falling to the ground and no threat of rain... Also, wedding wise, you get more for your buck, so what’s not to love? Pies & Soup
The fabulously friendly dessert table now includes different sweet and savoury pies. In some cases, it is replacing the wedding cakes and cupcakes completely. Although we do love us some cake, so we aren’t really big on it replacing that absolutely. The usual salad starter is replaced with a seasonal soup and crusty breads.

Navy & Charcoal & Metallics
Deep colours are back for bridesmaids dresses and accents, with the later leaning towards metallic’s for shoes, cakes, decorations and more.

Sleeves
Capped sleeves, bolero jackets or even fitted lace sleaves ala Kate Middelton. The usually strapless or sweatheart neckline will give way to more detail around this décolletage this Autumn.

Anyway, back to business...As an ode to the remnants of summer time, we’ve put together a colour palette inspired by the last lazy days of summer ...vintage blues, ivory and blush. Enjoy!

Budget beating tips for your FAB wedding

So, in the spirit of yesterday’s budget speech, we’ve decided to give you a list that can help you save some cash when it comes to planning your big day. It’s champagne taste on a beer budget all the way, baby!

* Have your wedding in winter. South African winters are actually lovely – it doesn’t rain, the sun shines and it isn’t totally freezing all the time, so you can get away with a sleeveless dress for most of the event.

* Have your wedding in the week or on a Sunday. This is actually quite popular nowadays, so it is not totally out of the norm anymore.

* Shop around for a good photographer that doesn’t cost the earth. They do exist (examples: the ones featured on this here blog). And nowadays they usually blog their work, so it’s not a hard task.

* Trim the guest list. And stick to it!

* Choose a non-traditional venue (or a new wedding venue that is still trying to establish itself). Less expensive options include restaurants, grand ol’ libraries or your parents' backyard. Just make sure you calculate the costs for items you'll need to bring in, such as porty loos and tables etc.

* Rent your wedding dress or find ones on sale. It’s really only for one day, so spending tons of thousands on one garment that you're going to wear for one day is a bit crazy if you think about it. Rationally.

* Save paper (and money) by doing an e-invite.

* Write your menu on a large chalkboard instead of printing menus for each person/table.

* Instead of getting a catering company to do your wedding, get a few speciality food trucks to serve your guests.

* Make your own favours or skip them all together.

* Use seasonal flowers and re-use your bridesmaids bouquets for your centrepieces. Or use things like fresh wheat (yes, wheat - see picture board below).

* Have a daytime / cocktail reception.

* Simplify your decor requirements and go for items that offer maximum impact with minimum expense such as candles, tasteful balloons and fairy lights.

* Serve signature cocktails and or limit the open bar to just wine and beer.

* Add the finishing touches to a cake yourself (like pretty ribbons or candies) or opt for a smaller cake.

Whimsical Alice in Wonderland Wedding Inspiration

The ladies at Moi Decor have been super busy with organising a beautifully styled “Alice in Wonderland” tea party themed shoot to showcase their gorgeous rental items. With fully themed weddings becoming more and more popular in 2012, Moi’s array of vintage items are perfect to bring almost any nostalgic theme to life. (View more wedding trends for 2012 here). But it doesn’t stop there. This Alice theme will also work well for a shower or an “unbirthday”!



Here are some more tips for your Alice in Wonderland themed event:

• Incorporate alarm clocks, old school stop or pocket watches, vintage keys and keyholes as part of your decor
• Use “drink me” or “eat me” tags for the edibles on display (this can work very well for a dessert and beverage stand)
• Playing cards or their iconography or any royal motif can be used
• Bunnies, top hats, teacups, vintage books and frames
• Garden games such as croquet are a winner too! Especially for guests who may be waiting while you are taking photos
• Don’t be afraid to make little bows from dainty ribbons which you can use almost anywhere – on your menus or table place settings, to adorn teacups hanging from a chandelier
• There is an array of wording options you can use for invitations. Tell your guests not to be late for a very important date, or formally request their presence for a game of croquet. Quotes from the book can also be used as table numbers.

A Holly Jolly Christmas Inspiration Board

There is nothing more festive than a Christmas Inspired wedding board! Even though our Christmases are filled with sunshine, swimming pools and braais, you can still go to town with this red and white wedding palette we have put together for you. There is so much you can do with a Christmas wedding: Candy Cane wedding cake, DIY Christmas baubles as favours, a Nutcracker inspired candy bar, poinsettia bouquets and don’t forget the Christmas lights!

You would think that this concept is quite simple and that photographers usually cover all the shots you would deem as necessary as representation of your big day. This is usually the case, but with the stress of the big day and all the chaos surrounding the photographer and you, it’s a good idea to have a list of Must-Have shots to be taken on your big day. You know... just in case!

1. The Dress on its own
This is probably the most expensive piece of clothing you will ever wear. Ever. A good enough reason for this Must-Have! Over and above the fact that it's one of the most anticipated aspects of a wedding.
